What are the stages of natural delivery?

Every labour and delivery is unique. However, the natural delivery process can be divided into three stages: labour, childbirth, and the placenta.

Labour

A woman will go through labour which starts with uterine contractions and ends with the cervix dilating 10 centimetres and 100% effaced for delivery. She will experience the following stages of labour:

  • Early labour: The time when the contraction starts and the cervix begins to dilate and thin. The cervix may be dilated around 5 centimetres at the end of early labour.
  • Active labour: In this stage, a woman feels strong contractions that may last for about a minute each and occur every three minutes. Some women may request medicines to get rid of the pain. The doctor may also give you oxytocin hormone to speed up the labour process.
  • Transitional labour: It is the time right before the cervix is 10 centimetres dilated. This stage is short but intense and may last around a minute. This stage may make you vomit, sweat, or feel shaky. This happens right before the woman starts to push out the baby.

Childbirth

This stage starts when the woman’s vagina reaches 10 centimetres of dilation and ends with the baby coming out of her vagina. The doctor will guide you through the process, especially if you have taken medicines and cannot feel contractions. This phase lasts for a few minutes to a few hours.

Delivering the placenta

This is the last stage of labour, commonly called afterbirth, which starts after the baby is removed from the vagina and ends when the placenta is delivered. This stage starts a few minutes after childbirth and lasts for about 30 minutes. Here, the doctor may ask you for a few more pushes.

How long will it take to heal from a natural delivery?

The recovery time after a natural delivery varies from person to person. Usually, the healing from natural delivery is faster than from a C-section. Many factors influence the recovery process. One of those is the vaginal tear and the severity of that tear. Due to the vaginal tear, you may feel soreness in the surrounding region for many weeks. Going to the bathroom, sitting, standing, or doing everyday activities might be painful. It is normal to experience itching and swelling around the tear. Many women have bruising, swelling, and general soreness in the vaginal area for one to two weeks, irrespective of the vaginal tear. Applying a cold compress or cooling sanitary pads may help you speed up your recovery.

Natural deliveries are highly successful and usually have low risks. Delivering a baby is a life-altering event. It isn’t easy to know what will happen during childbirth until you experience it, but talking to your gynaecologist and asking questions can help you prepare for the process.
